  • DA declares bird flu outbreak in PH
[Agriculture Secretary William Dar said duck and quail farms in Central Luzon farms are mostly affected by bird flu, which he reiterated, was caused by migratory birds visiting the country. (Photo from Department of Agriculture)] The Department of Agriculture (DA) declared on Wednesday, March 30, an outbreak of Avian Influenza (AI) or H5N1 in the country. This, as the DA reported an increasing number of avian flu cases mostly in Central Luzon, Manila Bulletin reported. Agriculture Secretary William Dar said duck and quail farms in Central Luzon farms are mostly affected by bird flu, which he reiterated, was caused by migratory birds visiting the country. “Most ducks and quails in Central Luzon were infected. We already provided assistance to farmers affected by the outbreak,” Dar said over Laging Handa briefing. In an earlier statement, the DA chief said that the agency had already issued a memorandum circular (MC) to intensify its containment and control of the disease. Under the MC, the DA “will regulate the movement of ducks, quails, chicken, and other poultry in bird-flu-affected areas, especially commodities from within the one-kilometer (km) quarantine area.” To properly implement the guidelines under the MC, the department and its attached agency, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), has also coordinated with concerned local government units (LGUs), Regional Field Offices (RFOs), and other poultry industry stakeholders.

  • Abandoned animals join Ukraine's war exodus
[More than two million of those crossed the border to Poland, where AFP has witnessed droves of animal lovers ferrying dogs, cats, parrots and turtles to safety. Some people who fled the war left their pets behind. (Photo by=AFP/Aleksey Filippov)] LVIV: At the "Home for Rescued Animals" in the city of Lviv, exotic creatures are now sheltered alongside everyday pets - those left behind in the rush of refugees fleeing Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The United Nations estimates more than 3.7 million Ukrainians have fled the country since the war began a month ago, BBC reported. More than two million of those crossing the border to Poland, where AFP has witnessed droves of animal lovers ferrying dogs, cats, parrots, and turtles to safety. Lviv - just 70km (45 miles) from the border - has been the final stopover on Ukrainian soil for many making the journey out of the war zone. Some soon-to-be refugees felt unable to take their pets further. Zalypskyy estimates his shelter has taken in 1,500 animals since the war began, from migrants and shelters in "hot spots" to the east. Between 10 and 20 were collected from Lviv's train station - the locus of chaos in the first days of the war, where carriages and platforms heaved with desperate passengers. However, the animals left here do not languish. Around 200 have been adopted by the locals of Lviv, while most of the rest are taken onwards by volunteers to Germany, Latvia, and Lithuania. There are currently no cats available for adoption - they are all bound for Poland.

  • Missing dog Zoey reunited with owners after 12 years
[Zoey had been missing since 2010 when she was about a year old. (Photo by=SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE)] Zoey had been missing for so long the microchip company had listed her as dead since 2015, San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said. Officer Brandon Levin, who scanned Zoey, got her owner's contact details from the chip firm, and found she still had the same mobile number. He said: "She was in complete shock."BBC reported that the dog was found about 60 miles from where she had gone missing in 2010, her family home in Lafayette. Michelle said: "We got her and her twin sister from the pound when they were six months old, she was with us for about six months. "We went to the store for about 20 minutes and came back and she was missing. "I'm excited to hopefully bring her back, get her healthy and let her live the rest of her life."

  • COVID-19 mask swallowed by sea turtle caught off Japan coast
[In the paper published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin earlier this month, the team also confirmed that commercially available masks contain stabilizers to prevent plastic from deteriorating due to ultraviolet rays. The additives are considered to be endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with hormonal systems of organisms. (Photo by=Martina)] TOKYO: A disposable mask has been found in the feces of a juvenile green sea turtle caught off Japan's northeastern coast, a study by a team of Japanese researchers recently showed, raising concerns that COVID-related plastic debris is contaminating the marine ecosystem, Kyodo reported. While sea turtles have been known to accidentally ingest plastics for some time, no face mask had been found during the 15-year-survey of the region prior to the pandemic, according to the team from the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and the University of Tokyo. Reports of disposable masks entering the ocean have increased in coastal areas around the world since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. The juvenile green turtle was by-caught alive in a net off Iwate Prefecture in August 2021, and is currently being kept in captivity. The item later confirmed to be a non-woven polypropylene mask was found in its feces by Takuya Fukuoka, a researcher at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. Hideshige Takada, a professor at the same university who was also involved in the study, said the findings suggest that marine life is being exposed to chemical substances through the accidental ingestion of plastic debris.

  • Dog trainer installs "poop posts" to make city more pet friendly
[Akari Tanaka's goal is to create an environment where pets, who are often seen as members of the family, can be accepted in communities, and "poop posts" are only the first step. Tanaka stands in front of a "poop post" for disposal of dog waste in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, on Dec. 10, 2021. (Photo by=Kyodo)] AOMORI: A dog trainer in northeastern Japan has taken it upon herself to make her city more pet-friendly by installing "poop posts" for owners to dispose of their dogs' waste.Akari Tanaka, a 37-year-old resident of Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, is hoping her project will help create a society where people can live comfortably with their pets as she says locals have struggled to "take the initiative to clean up after their dogs." Tanaka put up the first "poop post" outside her dog-grooming salon in July 2020. It stands about 90 centimeters tall, is 50 cm wide, and comes with plastic bags that people can use to pick up excrement. After setting up the post, Tanaka found that people naturally started to use it without being asked, and locals told her that they even gained the courage to pick up waste from other owners' dogs too. As the posts came with plastic bags attached, using them to pick up dog excrement took little effort.Tanaka used online crowdfunding to collect around 650,000 yen ($5,600) for the "poop post" project and has since been able to establish posts in three locations in the prefecture. She’s now in negotiations with municipalities to expand the posts to roadside rest areas and public parks.

  • US animal shelter shocked after 800 parakeets handed over
[The shelter said the birds were handed over in "a very unhealthy situation". (Photo by= DETROIT ANIMAL WELFARE GROUP)] A US animal shelter said it was in shock after more than 800 parakeets were surrendered to them. "A Christmas present we were not expecting," the Detroit Animal Welfare Group wrote on Facebook, BBC said. The birds were delivered in two batches by their owner's son, who had kept them in one room in what the shelter described as "a very unhealthy situation." "The irresponsibility of the owner is infuriating," the group wrote. The first 497 birds - crammed into seven cages - were dropped off on 23 December. The owner's son then returned on Boxing Day with a further 339. "We were in shock," the group wrote, "but could not turn them away." Kelly LeBonty, the rescue group's director, told the Detroit Free Press that the son said his father had initially planned to breed only a handful of birds but had ended up spending $1,200 (£890) a month on them. "They were barely moving. We had to get them out and into different cages," she said. The group said the parakeets - a species of parrot - will be put up for adoption after a veterinarian assesses them. It added that "owning a parakeet is a 6-15 year commitment". "As any pet, they should be part of the family."

  • Rare pink handfish spotted in Australia for first time in decades
[Rare pink handfish spotted in Australian waters. (Photo by= Karen Gowlett-Holmes/Tasmania University)] A rare "walking" handfish that is native only to Australia has been spotted for the first time in 22 years off the Tasmanian coast. The pink handfish was last sighted by a diver off Tasmania in 1999 and has only been seen four other times, BBC reported.Fearing for its survival, officials had recently classified it as endangered. But Australian researchers say they have found it again, on a deep-sea camera recording taken earlier this year in a marine park. The new vision shows the fish in deeper and more open waters than it had lived in previously. Scientists had thought the fish was a shallow-water species that lived in sheltered bays - but it has now been found at a depth of 150m (390 ft) off Tasmania's wild south coast."This is an exciting discovery and offers hope for the ongoing survival of pink handfish, as clearly they have a wider habitat and distribution than previously thought," said lead researcher and marine biologist Neville Barrett, an associate professor at the University of Tasmania. As per their name, the species has over-sized "hands" on which they "walk" along the seabed in addition to swimming.

  • Mother seals recognize pup's voice at two days old
[A northern elephant seal mother moves towards a speaker playing the sound of her pup's call. (Photo by= UC Santa Cruz)] "It's a cacophony in a seal colony," explains Dr. Caroline Casey, where hundreds of mums and pups call at once. Now, research led by California-based scientists has revealed that mother elephant seals can pick out their own baby's voice just two days after pups are born. This ability helps pups - and mothers - survive during a precarious time. But it has left researchers puzzling over why female seals often feed each other's pups. The study, led by Dr. Juliette Linossier, required the international scientists to "sneak" microphones into the seal colony to avoid disturbing mothers and pups. Dr. Casey has studied vocal communication in elephant seals for a decade. So she and her colleagues designed an audio experiment to determine if the animals could recognize their babies amid the noise of a breeding colony. This early recognition makes sense, the researchers say, because the relationship between mother and newborn elephant seal is extremely physically dependent. However, Dr. Casey suggests humans may have played an unexpected role in the elephant seals' urge to feed other pups of, arguably, closely-related females. In the late 1800s, hunted the species to near extinction. "So we think all of the individuals alive today - around 300,000 animals - are related to about 20 animals that survived," said Dr. Casey.

  • Koalas: Mass deaths in Victoria bring animal cruelty charges
[Koalas are a protected species in the Australia's state of Victoria. Some koalas had starved to death in the remaining trees. Bulldozers killed others. According to Australian broadcaster ABC, 21 koalas were found dead, and 49 more were euthanized. (Photo by=Helen Oakley/ Facebook)] Regulators in Australia have issued hundreds of animal cruelty charges over the deaths of dozens of koalas in the state of Victoria. The BBC said that the animals were found dead at a partially cleared timber plantation last year at Cape Bridgewater.More were later euthanized because of dehydration and injuries sustained during the incident. A landowner and an earthmoving business are accused of harming and killing the animals by clearing the area. They face 126 charges each. A second firm, a contractor, faces one charge of animal cruelty for disturbing the koala population. They have yet to enter pleas. Victoria state's Conservation Regulator did not name the accused. Each charge can carry a hefty fine or a maximum 12-month jail sentence, BBC Sydney correspondent Shaimaa Khalil reports. Some koalas had starved to death in the remaining trees. Bulldozers killed others.According to Australian broadcaster ABC, 21 koalas were found dead, and 49 more were euthanized. Bluegum trees - a vital koala habitat - were harvested from the plantation, leaving only a few isolated pockets. The Victorian Conservation Regulator estimates that 200 koalas were affected by the incident. Koalas are a protected species in Victoria. Resident Helen Oakley came across the dead animals and posted a video of herself sobbing and relaying the news, prompting the investigation.

  • Two zebras returned to US farm after months on the lam
[Three zebras (not pictured) had initially escaped the Maryland farm in August. (Photo by= Getty Images)] Two zebras have been returned to a farm in the US state of Maryland after months on the run. BBC said that in August, three initially escaped from their private enclosure, turning heads across the state, with residents sharing sightings on social media. One of the zebras was later found dead in an illegal snare trap. Officials told local media on Tuesday that the remaining pair were found and returned last week, but no further details were provided. Previous attempts to catch the zebras included setting up a feeding station and corral. The owner, 76-year-old Jerry Lee Holly, holds a license for the animals at his 300-acre property in Upper Marlboro, which he runs as an exotic animal breeding business. In October, US authorities charged Mr. Holly with three counts of animal cruelty and a local media report. Mr. Holly has not publicly responded to the charges.According to an investigation by public broadcaster WAMU, published in 2019, Mr. Holly has owned various animals at his business, including primates, giraffes, and bears. He has previously been cited for over 100 violations of animal welfare laws, including failure to maintain adequate fencing around his zebra enclosure. Mr. Holly didn't response to requests for comment by WAMU.

  • 29th Philippine eaglet hatched after 5 years
[The still unnamed hatchling is the 29th Philippine Eagle bred in captivity, emerging from its egg on Dec. 4 at 1:16 p.m. (Photo from Philstar)] DAVAO CITY: The Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) produced the 29th Philippine eaglet bred in captivity five years after Sakura, the last eaglet, was hatched at the Center in Barangay Malagos. The new eaglet is an offspring of parents Ariela, a female Philippine Eagle adopted by Ariela Marketing Co. in 2015, and the male MVP Matatag, adopted by Philippine Long Distance Telecommunications Corp. in 2017, PhilStar reported. The late eagle Pag-asa was the first-ever Philippine Eagle bred in captivity that was hatched by the PEC in 1992. At least 27 other eaglets were later produced by the PEC under its captive breeding program until the hatching of the 29th eaglet last Saturday. The PEC’s captive breeding program was not able to produce any eaglet over the past five years because the eagles at the center’s gene pool have grown old. Eagles Ariela and MVP Matatag are from a younger batch of raptors. The hatching of the 29th eaglet is a welcome development, as the population of the Philippine Eagle, the country’s national bird, continues to dwindle, with only less than a thousand including those sighted in the wild. According to Dennis Salvador, executive director of the non-profit Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), “Chick No. 29” was hatched on Dec. 4 at 1:16 p.m.

  • Oregon police seek clues in the poisoning of eight wolves
[Grey wolves in the US state of Montana. (Photo by= Universal Images Group via Getty Images)] Police in the US state of Oregon investigated the poisoning of eight grey wolves found dead by officials earlier this year. Five wolves were discovered near Mount Harris in February, followed by another three later. Tests later confirmed that a "poisonous substance" had killed the wolves, BBC reported.Authorities are asking for help from the public, and conservation groups are offering a $26,000 (£19,600) award for information leading to a conviction. In a statement, Oregon State Police said that the initial batch of five wolves - all of whom were collared members of the same pack - were found dead along with a nearby magpie on 9 February. Just over a month later, on 11 March, officials responding to a 'mortality signal' from a wolf collar discovered another dead wolf, a skunk, and a magpie. Two more wolves were found dead in April and July. Toxicology reports confirmed that all the wolves had been poisoned. The police statement said that investigators have "exhausted leads" in the case and are seeking information from the public. An Oregon State Police spokesperson told the BBC that there are several possible charges that the culprits could face. A conviction for taking or possessing a wolf - a felony - could result in a prison sentence of up to five years and fines of $125,000.
