  • Religious whipping marks Good Friday in the Philippines
BULACAN: Catholic zealots in the Philippines whipped their backs bloody and raw on Good Friday, as the fervently religious country marked Easter with gruesome displays of faith. Scores of men — their faces covered — walked barefoot as they flogged themselves with bamboo whips under a blazing sun near the capital Manila, while others carried wooden crosses as they were beaten, in a ritual frowned upon by the Church, PH Iinquirer reported.Roy Balatbat, his skin still bearing fresh wounds from a public flailing on Thursday, walked for about a kilometer, striking himself and stopping to prostrate in prayer on the hot ground. “It’s punishing but if you have a wish, you will endure the pain,” Balatbat, 49, told AFP in Hagonoy municipality, Bulacan province. “I have been doing this for 30 years since I was a young man. My devotion is that I will only stop when I can’t do it anymore.” While most devotees in the mainly Catholic nation spend Good Friday at church or with family, others go to these extreme lengths to atone for sins or seek divine intervention. Before the grisly flogging begins, the men’s barebacks are deliberately punctured to make them bleed. Veterans of the gory spectacle display scars of previous whippings, while others endure the punishing act for the first time.

(Photo by=Kyodo)] TOKYO: Fifty-five percent of Japanese companies based overseas have had their business operations impacted, or foresee they will be impacted, by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a recent survey by a Japanese staffing firm showed, Kyodo reported. The online survey of 699 Japanese entities across 10 economies, conducted by Pasona Group Inc. in mid-March, found that firms based in France were by far the most affected with 92.3 percent responding they had been impacted in some way. As the only European country included in the survey, this was followed by Malaysia at 72.0 percent and Singapore at 66.7 percent. Of the 55 percent of the overseas-based firms, 43.2 percent said they already feel the effects of the conflict, while 22.7 percent said they expect to do so within a month and 26.8 percent within three months. The most cited impact among the 43.2 percent was soaring costs of raw materials including oil, chemicals and metals. This was followed by rising logistics costs and energy prices. The economies covered by the March 11 to 16 survey were the United States, France, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and India. The manufacturing sector made up the biggest group of companies at 43.6 percent, followed by trading houses at 20.7 percent and retailers and wholesalers at 9.9 percent.

The city has been striving to stop the outbreak by imposing a two-stage lockdown, prompting manufacturers to halt operations and causing severe congestion at Shanghai port, the world's biggest container transporting hub.

  • Taliban bans drug cultivation, including lucrative opium
[An Afghan man works on a poppy field in Jalalabad province April 17, 2014. (File photo by=REUTERS/ Parwiz )] KABUL: The Taliban announced on Sunday (Apr 3) a ban on the cultivation of narcotics in Afghanistan, the world's biggest opium producer, Reuters reported."As per the decree of the supreme leader of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, all Afghans are informed that from now on, cultivation of poppy has been strictly prohibited across the country," according to an order from the Taliban's supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzada. If anyone violates the decree, the crop will be destroyed immediately and the violator will be treated according to the Sharia law," the order, announced at a news conference by the Ministry of Interior in Kabul, said. The order said the production, use or transportation of other narcotics was also banned. Drug control has been one major demand of the international community of the Islamist group, which took over the country in August and is seeking formal international recognition in order to wind back sanctions that are severely hampering banking, business and development. The Taliban banned poppy growing towards the end of their last rule in 2000 as they sought international legitimacy, but faced a popular backlash and later mostly changed their stance, according to experts.

  • Pakistan heads for early election amid move to remove PM Imran Khan
[Imran Khan, elected in July 2018 vowing to tackle corruption and fix the economy, remains popular with some voters, even though a lot of his public support has been lost as a result of rocketing inflation and ballooning foreign debt. (Photo by= Getty Images)] Pakistan's president has dissolved parliament - a step towards early elections - following an attempt to remove PM Imran Khan from office, BBC reported. It comes after parliament's deputy speaker refused to hold a vote of no-confidence the PM was expected to lose. Mr Khan claims the US is leading a conspiracy to remove him because of his criticism of US policy and other foreign policy decisions he has taken.Opposition politicians ridicule the allegation, and the US has denied it. Imran Khan visited Moscow to meet President Vladimir Putin as Russia was launching the invasion of Ukraine, He has previously criticised America's "War on Terror". The BBC's Secunder Kermani says prime minister is widely regarded as having come to power with the help of Pakistan's army, but now observers say they have fallen out. In public, however, both the military and Mr Khan deny there has been any falling out. His political opponents seized the opportunity to demand the no-confidence vote after persuading a number of his coalition partners to defect to them. There have been only two previous instances in Pakistan's political history when sitting prime ministers faced a vote of no confidence, and both times Benazir Bhutto, in 1989, and Shaukat Aziz, in 2006, emerged unscathed.

  • State Dept. says U.S. closely monitoring North Korea for additional provocation
[Ned Price also highlighted the U.S.' strong alliances with South Korea and Japan, insisting they will not change or weaken due to a change of government in any of the three countries. (File photo by=NICHOLAS KAMM/ POOL/AFP via Getty Images)] WASHINGTON: The United States is closely monitoring North Korea for future provocations, a Department of State spokesperson said Thursday, amid reports that the recalcitrant country may be preparing for a possible nuclear test. Ned Price also said the U.S. and its allies will work to hold North Korea accountable for any new provocations. "I am not a position to speak to intelligence one way or another, But what I can say is that the DPRK has engaged in a number of provocations in recent weeks. But this is a government that has engaged in provocations for a number of years now," the department press secretary said when asked about reports of a possible North Korean nuclear tests in the future. "Just prior to what is assessed to have been the launch of a probable ICBM, we released information indicating that such a launch might be in the offing," Price said in a department press briefing. "So we are monitoring the situation very closely." The spokesperson also warned there will be additional consequences should the North continue on its path of provocations. Earlier reports said the North appeared to be repairing the underground tunnels of its Punggye-ri nuclear test site that it purportedly demolished in 2018, suggesting preparations for a possible nuclear test.

  • Japan to see higher prices for food, daily goods from April
[For example, Megmilk Snow Brand Co., Meiji Co., and Morinaga Milk Industry Co. will raise their prices for cheese, while The Nisshin OilliO Group Ltd. and J-Oil Mills Inc. said they will increase their prices of cooking oil for household use. (Photo by= Kyodo)] TOKYO: Japanese consumers are expected to face more challenges amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, as a wave of price hikes will hit essential items such as food and daily goods in the new fiscal year beginning Friday due to the rising cost of raw materials, Kyodo reported. Since there will be changes in fiscal 2022 in some social systems closely related to people's day-to-day living, such as the lowering of the amount of public pension benefits, the rising prices are likely to squeeze socially vulnerable people like pensioners particularly hard. Other food items subject to the upcoming price hikes include Kagome Co.'s tomato ketchup and Yaokin Co.'s "Umaibo," a popular snack meaning "delicious stick" that has been sold at 10 yen ($0.08) without the tax for more than 40 years. Regarding daily goods, factory prices of Nippon Paper Crecia Co.'s tissue and toilet paper, and some diaper products of Kao Corp. will go up. The major transportation system in the country is no exception either. East Japan Railway Co. will effectively raise ticket prices of shinkansen bullet trains during the high season, and Kyushu Railway Co. will lift the prices of some coupon tickets for the bullet trains.

  • Assam: 'Mysterious' giant stone jars found in India
[The 65 sandstone jars were found scattered over four sites in the north-eastern state of Assam. "The next step in this project is to excavate and extensively document features of these jars," Dr Thakuria said. (Photo by=TILOK THAKURIA)] Researchers have uncovered giant "mysterious" jars in India that may have been used for ancient human burial practices. The 65 sandstone jars were found scattered over four sites in the north-eastern state of Assam, BBC reported. They vary in shape and size. Some of the jars are tall and cylindrical, while the others are partly or fully buried in the ground. Similar stone vessels have previously been found in Laos and Indonesia. The details of the discovery - which involved researchers from three universities in India and Australia - were published in the Journal of Asian Archaeology journal this week. The research was led by Tilok Thakuria from North-Eastern Hill University and Uttam Bathari from Gauhati University. "We still don't know who made the giant jars or where they lived. It's all a bit of a mystery", said Nicholas Skopal, a researcher at the Australian National University who was part of the research team. Although it is still not clear what the giant jars were used for, the researchers believe they were "likely associated with mortuary practices". Dr Thakuria told the BBC that "presently the jars are empty", and they were once possibly covered with lids. Some 10 sites containing more than 700 jars have been uncovered in Assam so far, Dr Thakuria said. They believe these jars date back to before 400 BC.

  • Japan not pulling out of Russian energy project: PM Kishida
[Prime Minister Fumio Kishida says Japan will not abandon its stake in the Sakhalin-2 liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Russia as it is essential to energy security. (Photo by= David Mareuil/Pool via Reuters)] TOKYO: Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Thursday that Japan will not withdraw from the Sakhalin 2 oil and gas project in the Russian Far East despite firms of other countries exiting in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Kyodo reported. "It is an extremely important project in terms of energy security as it has contributed to the long-term, stable supply of inexpensive liquefied natural gas," said Kishida in a parliamentary session. But he added, "We will step up efforts to reduce our reliance on Russia for energy in line with a Group of Seven nations plan." Japan depended on Russia for 3.6 percent of its crude oil imports and 8.8 percent of LNG in 2021, according to the Japan External Trade Organization. Most of Japan's LNG imports from Russia come from the project, which involves major Japanese trading houses, Mitsui & Co. and Mitsubishi Corp. Mitsui and Mitsubishi hold stakes of 12.5 percent and 10 percent, respectively, in the project, while Russia's state-owned energy giant Gazprom PJSC owns 50 percent. Britain's Shell PLC, which holds the remaining 27.5 percent stake, announced its exit from the project just days after Russia started the invasion of Ukraine late last month. Exxon Mobil Corp. of the United States has also said it would withdraw from the Sakhalin 1 oil project.

  • Elon Musk's SpaceX to bring Starlink to Philippines
[Elon Musk gestures as he speaks during a press conference at SpaceX's Starbase facility near Boca Chica Village in South Texas on February 10, 2022. Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk delivered an eagerly-awaited update on SpaceX's Starship, a prototype rocket the company is developing for crewed interplanetary exploration. (Photo by Jim Watsons/ AFP)] MANILA: SpaceX, the aerospace company of eccentric billionaire and world’s richest man Elon Musk, is set to enter the Philippines, the government announced Thursday. This could propel the country as the first in Southeast Asia to access SpaceX's low earth orbit satellite network constellation called “Starlink”, the Department of Trade and Industry said Thursday. Starlink is comprised of over 1,600 satellites, PhilStar reported. “Preparations are underway for their registration,” the DTI said in a statement. “At present, their application is being processed and the locations of their gateways are being visited.” Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said SpaceX’s entry would give better internet speeds and connectivity in the country, which is notorious for its poor telecommunications especially in remote parts of the archipelago. The company is currently establishing a local Filipino entity that will be their wholly-owned subsidiary and is targeting to deploy three gateways in the first phase of their launch, he added.“Their system will augment, as well as complement existing broadband capacities. This will further capacitate micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), facilitate online learning, e-commerce, and fintech," Lopez said.

  • Two Palestinians killed during Israeli raid in West Bank
[Palestinian health officials said the Palestinians killed in Jenin were aged 17 and 23. (Photo by= Reuters)] Two Palestinians have been killed and 15 injured during an Israeli raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian officials say. The Israeli military said its troops responded to fire from Palestinian gunmen as they apprehended "terrorist suspects". One soldier was injured. The raid came after a man from a nearby village killed five people in Israel. A total of 11 people were killed in three attacks in Israel over the past two weeks, raising fears of what the country's prime minister has called "a wave of murderous terrorism". The Palestinian health ministry said two young Palestinians died after being brought to local hospitals. Three of the injured Palestinians were reported to be in critical condition, the ministry added. On Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said the IDF, the Israel Police, and the Shin Bet security agency had "significantly increased their intelligence operations to reach those who are planning to carry out attacks". A Palestinian gunman opened fire at passers-by on residential streets, killing two Israeli civilians, two Ukrainian men and an Israeli Arab police officer who confronted him at the scene. The gunman was shot dead by another officer. Palestinian militant groups welcomed the attack. But it’s condemned by President Mahmoud Abbas, who said it might lead to escalation at a time when "we are all striving for stability".
